So why do so many promising research projects struggle to become successful businesses?
The EIC Impact Report 2025 (April 2025) offers a revealing look at this problem. It highlights how EIC Pathfinder and Transition programs are helping research teams move from exploration to exploitation. Yet, even with support, many spinouts are launched before they understand who their customer is or what problem they truly solve.
The Spinout Trap
We’ve seen this happen over and over again: a promising patent leads to a startup. The team rushes to incorporate. They apply for funding. But they haven’t talked to a single user or tested a single assumption.
In the report, companies like iPronics succeeded not because they had a patent, but because they tested commercial value early — often before company formation. That’s the key.
Many spinouts are launched too soon. And without a commercial mindset from the start, they burn precious time and resources chasing the wrong opportunities.
What Needs to Change
Tech transfer isn’t broken — but it needs an update. We need a new model where commercialization planning happens before the legal entity is formed. Where we invest time in understanding:
- Who needs this technology?
- What’s the pain point it solves?
- Is there a real market?
